Functional Training Variety

  • Use the pad like a plyo box for explosive and controlled movements: box jumps, step-ups, box squats, pistol squats, incline and decline push-ups, triceps dips, preacher curls, mountain climbers, elevated lunges and side planks.
  • It also optimizes dumbbell pullovers by firmly supporting the thoracic spine, opening the chest and maximizing muscular activation.
  • From glute bridges and single-leg glute-ham raises to one of the most effective lower-body movements—Bulgarian split squats.
  • Acts as a seat for calf raises on your R8 Smith machine or lat pulldown variations on the R8 Alpha or R8 Bradley.
  • On the R8 Alpha, doubles as a seat for unilateral leg extensions.

Hip Thrusts: Execution and Benefits

  • The pad was specifically designed for hip thrusts—one of the most effective exercises for training the posterior chain, including hamstrings, glutes, quadriceps, and the lower back.
  • The load is positioned across the hips while the athlete lies on the floor with bent knees and shoulders supported by the elevated pad. A vertical hip drive lifts the weight until the body forms a near-straight line from knees to shoulder blades, with the pad acting as the lever.
  • Compared to traditional barbell squats, hip thrusts place significantly less strain on the spine, making them well suited for rehabilitation.
  • They promote muscular balance between core and glutes, as well as quadriceps and hamstrings, helping reduce lower-back discomfort and prevent injuries.
